THE number of
drowning accidents at Ajman
beach this year has reached
10. |
|
Four people
have died and six were
rescued this year, up from
2006 when three people died
and five were rescued, said
Colonel Saleh Saeed Al
Matrooshi, director of Ajman
Civil Defence. |
|
Talking to
Gulf Today Matroushi said
that majority of those
accidents occurred due to
swimmers' negligence and
their insistence to swim on
the days when swimming is
prohibited due to high tides |
|
"During this
part of the year the weather
seems to be very fine for
swimming but people should
be quite aware that during
the winter there will be
more undercurrent in the
sea. To avoid fatal
accidents swimmers should
not go very far away from
the shore and they should
know that the waves can
easily pull them inside the
sea and they can easily
drown in deep water," warned
Matroushi
|
|
Matroushi
urged swimmers to swim in an
area closer to watch towers
where a lifeguard is always
on the vigil.
|
|
"Four life
guards are working all week
long from 7:30am till sunset
at the 2.5 kilometre Ajman
beach in addition to a
special team of rescuers who
can pull out the corpse and
the cars or trucks that
falls inside the beach. We
also have fully equipped
marine rescue ambulance.
|
|
"People
should always swim in the
areas where it is clearly
mentioned that swimming is
allowed and should never
think of swimming in other
unauthorised areas as they
will risk their lives."
|
|
He added that
people should abide by the
signboards placed on the
beach that informing
beachgoers whether swimming
is allowed on the particular
day |
